Defending champion Becca Huffer of Overland GC and Alison Whitaker of Mira Vista GC claimed co-medalist honors with one over par rounds of 73 during the stroke play qualifying round. The round of 16 and quarterfinal matches held on day two saw both Huffer and Whitaker advance after their respective matches. The similarities, however, ended in the semifinal round where Stefanie Ferguson of The Broadlands GC upset defending champion Becca Huffer 4 and 2. Whitaker, on the other hand advanced to the finals where she and Ferguson went head to head during the 36-hole match. Whitaker maintained the lead for most of the round but Ferguson fought hard to the 36th hole where Whitaker finally claimed the title 1 up.
Kathy Malpass Earns the 2006 CWGA Match Play Championship Senior Division Title
Meanwhile, in the Senior Division, defending champion Lynn Larson of The Pinery CC was knocked out of contention in the quarterfinal round by eventual champion Kathy Malpass of Hiwan GC, 2 and 1. As the fifth seed, Malpass continued to work her way through the bracket by defeating the number one seed and 2005 Senior Player of the Year Kathleen Cox of Glenmoor CC 5 and 4. At the same time, Mary Smith of the Executive Women’s GA was earning her way through the other side of the bracket. In the final, Malpass was able to defeat Smith 4 and 3 to win her first CWGA title.
