2003 CGA Senior Player of the Year Scott Radcliffe of Rolling Hills Country Club has been crowned the 2004 CGA Senior Match Play Champion at the Ranch Country Club. Radcliffe defeated Charlie Post of Plum Creek Golf and Country Club 4 and 3 in the final match to win his first CGA individual state amateur title. “It was really hard,” said Radcliffe after the match. “It all boiled down to putts, and mine went in.” However, it was about 10 minutes later waiting for the Byron Williamson Trophy presentation that Radcliffe said it really set in that he had won the championship. “I really won it, didn’t I?” Radcliffe asked one of the CGA staff members. Post was awarded the CGA Silver Medal as finalist, and Radcliffe was presented the CGA Gold Medal as champion, and his home club (Rolling Hills CC) will display the Byron Williamson Trophy until next year’s championship.
Radcliffe showed he meant business early against Post in the finals. Radcliffe went 2 up with birdies on the first two holes, and birdied the ninth hole to take a 3 up lead into the back nine. Radcliffe got up and down on 10 to save par and halve the hole with Post, who then won 11 with a par to cut Radcliffe’s lead down to 2 up. However, Radcliffe won 12 with a par to return to 3 up. On the par-5 14th hole, Post nearly sunk his eagle chip and settled for a tap-in birdie, only to watch Radcliffe make his seven-foot bending birdie putt to halve the hole. On the par-3 15th, Radcliffe faced a breaking 18-footer for birdie with Post already in the hole with par. Radcliffe already had his fists in the air when his putt found the hole for the birdie and a 4 and 3 victory.
Radcliffe defeated Jerry Kidney of Overland Park Golf Course in 21 holes in the morning’s semifinal round to advance to final match. Post earned his spot in the final by defeating Kary Kaltenbacher of Glenmoor Country Club 1 up in their semifinal match.
In the Super Senior Division, Dan Dicker of Fossil Trace Golf Club won the title by defeating John Kaiser of The Meadows Golf Course 3 and 2 in the final match.
