2002 CGA Senior Player of the Year, John Olive of the Broadmoor Golf Club, proved once again why he is the most dominant senior amateur player in the state by winning his third consecutive CGA Senior Match Play title at Heritage at Westmoor. Olive, the top seed, defeated the number two seed, Larry Netherton of Highlands Ranch Golf Club, 1 up in a tightly contested final match. This being his fourth win overall, Olive now joins Larry Eaton, Ed Nosewicz, Sr. and Bert Welz as the only four-time champions (the most by any player). Olive also joins Welz as the only other player to win three in a row (Welz did it 1990-1992).
Olive made the turn after nine holes with a 3 up lead on Netherton thanks to birdies on the par-5 third, the par-5 sixth, and the par-4 eighth holes. Netherton proceeded to win holes 11 and 12 with birdies to pull to just 1 down. On 15, when Olive failed to get up and down to save par, Netherton’s par putt made the match all square. The turning point came on the par-3 17th, despite both players hitting the green. Olive made par from 18 feet, and Netherton, who was about 35 feet from the hole after his tee shot, was unable to get down in two and Olive took a 1 up lead into the par-5 18th. Both players halved the hole with pars and Olive earned a 1 up victory and the title.
Olive earned his place in the final match by defeating Scott Radcliffe of Rolling Hills Country Club 1 up in their semifinal match. Olive was 2 up with three holes to play when Radcliffe proceeded to win 16 and 17 the make the match all square going into 18. Radcliffe’s tee shot on 18 found the water, however, and Olive won the hole and the match with a par. Netherton advanced to the final match by defeating Tiara Rado Golf Course superintendent Doug Jones 2 and 1 in their semifinal match.
In the Super Senior Division, Larry Hayes of Hyland Hills Golf Courses earned the title by defeating Michael Carlon of Red Rocks Country Club 2 and 1 in the final match.
