John Olive of Broadmoor Golf Club took a two-stroke lead into the final round of the CGA Senior Stroke Play Championship at Boulder Country Club. As is the case with most of Olive’s leads, it held up. Olive’s final round score of 72 gave him a total of 212 (two over par) and a two-stoke victory. Olive maintained his two-stroke lead over Bob Churchich of Boulder Country Club through the front nine, then improved his to four strokes with a 12-foot par putt on the 227-yard par-3 eleventh hole. Olive got into serious tree-trouble on 15, but made what he called a “really, really good bogey” to keep his lead in tact. Churchich, the former University of Nebraska All-American quarterback, took second place at 214. Jerry Kidney of Overland Park Golf Course, who Olive defeated in the Match Play final earlier this year, finished third at 215.
With his win, Olive now holds the 2001 CGA Senior Match Play and Stroke Play titles. The last time the same player held both titles in the same year was 1997 – when Olive won them both. Since 1972, the same player has held both titles in the same year six times, but only three players have accomplished the feat. Larry Eaton did it in 1981 and again in 1985, then John Golden did it in 1993 and repeated the feat two years later in 1995, and now Olive has done it twice.
In the Super Senior Division, Tom Reed of the Ranch Country Club fired a final round 74 for a total of 222 to in the division. Reed finished 7 strokes ahead of Jim Brown of Fox Hill Country Club and John Kaiser of The Meadows Golf Club, who tied for second place at 229.
In the Masters Division (70 and older), Les Fowler of Boulder Country Club finished at 236 to take the title by 12 strokes.
