Hayes Wins 2000 Junior Stroke Play Championship

John Hayes (pictured, left), a recent graduate of Kent in Littleton, knows all too well that golf is a game of inches. After three grueling days in 90-plus degree weather, he found himself standing on the 18th green at Southridge Golf Club tied with Derek O’Neill (pictured, right)of Littleton. Both players faced six-foot putts, and a playoff seemed imminent. O’Neill’s putt slid past the hole, missing by an inch – opening the door for Hayes to win outright. Hayes made the putt for a final round of 70, and a total of 209, to win the 2000 CGA State Boys’ Stroke Play Championship by one stroke, and one inch. Hayes will be attending Colorado State University in the fall, and will be on the golf team.

O’Neill claimed second place and the CGA Silver Medal at 210, and is the only Coloradoan to qualify for the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. Drew Stoltz in his hometown of Fort Collins fired a 69 in the final round to take third place at 212. Dustin Mills of Arvada, who won the CGA State Boys’ Match Play last June, took fourth place in a playoff over Andy Connell of Denver, both of whom shot 213.
