Flying High

Brittany Fan has been a model of consistency for the University of Colorado women’s golf team for more than a year.

Want proof? The last time the golfer from Hawaii finished outside the top 20 individually at a college tournament, it was 2016.

But on Tuesday, the senior did something she hadn’t done before in her college career: claim an individual title — or at least a share of it.

With just a couple of months left in her time as a collegian, Fan won the Meadow Club Women’s Collegiate in Fairfax, Calif. After losing a three-stroke lead she held going into the final nine holes, Fan regained the top spot with an eagle on the par-5 15th hole, which left her 3 under par for the par-5s on Tuesday. But a bogey on the 16th hole dropped her into a tie with co-champion Samantha Gong from San Francisco (72-68).

Fan (pictured), runner-up in the 2015 CWGA Match Play and a former low amateur at the CoBank Colorado Women’s Open, posted rounds of 67-73 for a 4-under-par 140 total in the event, which was shortened to 36 holes due to weather issues.

In leading CU to a fourth-place showing in the 16-team field, Fan made an eagle, two birdies, three bogeys and one double bogey on Tuesday.

It was the second top-10 individual finish of the season for Fan and the seventh of her college career. Her best showing before Tuesday had been a third place, as a sophomore.

Fan qualified in Colorado last year for her second U.S. Amateur, and paired with then-CU teammate Esther Lee to be the stroke-play medalist in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship.

Also finishing in the top 10 individually for the Buffs on Tuesday was sophomore Robyn Choi, who tied for third at 2-under-par 142. It was Choi’s sixth top-seven finish of the season.
