Paintbrush Debut

The inaugural Paintbrush Invitational at Colorado Golf Club in Parker features a field that includes three of the top 15 men’s college teams in the nation, according to Golfweek. But that hasn’t kept three of the Colorado teams competing from being within 10 strokes of the lead after the first day of play.

With round 2 of the three-round event not quite complete, No. 3 Oklahoma State leads the way at 7 under par, while No. 7 Texas Tech is tied with New Mexico for second place at 6 under.

The University of Colorado, ranked 19th, shares fourth place with No. 14 Oregon, the defending national champion, at 2 under par. The host University of Denver stands at 2 over, while Colorado State is 3 over.

And individually, DU senior Petter Mikalsen (pictured) holds the top spot at 9 under par through 34 holes. In the 11-hole stretch starting on No. 7 in the second round, the Norwegian golfer was 8 under par, including an eagle on No. 16. Mikalsen, who is looking for his first individual college victory, was two ahead of New Mexico’s Andre Garcia when play was called due to darkness.

Also in the top 10 individually are CU’s Ethan Freeman and CSU’s Max Oelfke, who share fifth place at 3 under par.

The tournament will conclude on Tuesday.
