Welcome Back

A year after his twin brother, Jeremy Paul, won the season-opening Ballyneal Challenge, University of Colorado junior Yannik Paul captured individual honors in the three-team event in Holyoke.

Yannik (pictured), a German native who returned to the Buffs after a year away from college golf, shot back-to-back rounds of 5-under-par 66 to claim the individual title by five strokes on Tuesday.

The Buffs earned the team title by 27 strokes after carding a 17-under-par 551 total for 36 holes. Wyoming (578) placed second and Northern Colorado (589) third.

Yannik Paul, who stands No. 151 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, led the way for a CU team that placed five individuals in the top six at Ballyneal. Following Paul’s 132 total, CU’s Ethan Freeman was second at 137 and Buffs Spencer Painton and Morten Toft Hansen tied for third at 140 with Colorado resident Glenn Workman, who plays for Wyoming. Jeremy Paul came in sixth at 142. Painton, a former Colorado 5A state high school champion, was making his CU debut after transferring from Kansas.

The Ballyneal Challenge marks the first of eight NCAA Division I tournaments (five men’s and three women’s) that will be held in Colorado over the next five weeks.
