Near Miss for Buffs

The University of Colorado women’s golf team hasn’t captured a team championship in almost four years, but it very nearly got over the hump on Tuesday.

But the Buffs, ranked 20th in the nation by Golfweek, had to settle for a runner-up showing at the Bay Area Intercollegiate in Fairfax, Calif., three strokes behind champion Cal.

It was CU’s second runner-up team performance of the season.

The Buffs shot a 2-over-par 290 on Tuesday to post a 10-over-par 586 total in the tournament, which was shortened to 36 holes due to weather issues. CU last claimed a team title in a college tournament in March 2012.

CU sophomore Brittany Fan (pictured), runner-up in the 100th CWGA Match Play last year, notched her best college finish, placing third at 2-under-par 142, two shots behind champion Hannah Suh of Cal.

Also ending up in the top 10 — for the fourth time this season — was CU junior Esther Lee, who finished eighth at 146. A third Buff, Alexis Keating, was also on course for a top-10 finish, but she was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard.

Colorado State, meanwhile, placed 12th in the 13-team field, with a 607 total.
