Ken Sady of Eagle Ranch GC defeated defending champion David Delich of The Broadmoor GC 1 up to win the 2008 CGA Senior Match Play Championship at Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course. For Sady, who had twice been runner-up in the CGA Match Play (1992 and 1995), this was his first state championship title.
Delich opened the final match with an eagle on the par-5 first hole to take an early 1 up lead. He stretched his lead to 2 up with a birdie on the fifth hole, but Sady cut the lead down to 1 with a remarkable birdie on the ninth hole despite his drive finding the native rough. Delich responded with a birdie on the par-4 12th to regain a 2 up lead. Sady showed some nice touch around the greens on 14 and 15 by pitching up to conceded pars to win both holes and square the match. Delich then made birdie on 16 to retake the lead only to lose it on the par-3 17th with a bogie. With the match all square on the par-5 18th hole, Sady found the green in 2 while Delich’s second shot nestled in the deep greenside bunker. The match ended when Delich failed to make par and conceded Sady’s tap-in giving him the 1 up victory.
Sady’s touch around the green and length off the tee contributed strongly to his victory. Sady was considerably longer off the tee than Delich all day giving Sady the luxury of of seeing Delich’s second shot before playing his own. He was quick to attribute this to his driver, which belongs to his 14-year-old son Andrew. His son suggested that his father play the tournament with it, and according to Sady, “I hit the heck out that thing all week. It really gave me an edge off the tee.”
Sady had earned his place in the final match by defeating Ted Warner of Greeley CC 4r and 2 in the morning’s semifinal round. Delich defeated Richard Gorbell of Springs Ranch GC 1 up to make his second consecutive final match appearance.
In the Super Senior Division, 1998 Senior Match Play champion Roger Gunderson of Green Valley Ranch GC defeated Jim Collins of The CC 2 up in the final match. In his career, Gunderson has now won the CGA Senior Match Play and CGA Senior Stroke Play titles in both the Championship Divisions and the Super Senior Divisions.
