CSU player Zen Brown of Indian Tree GC defeated Tom Glissmeyer of CC of Colorado 10 and 9 to win the 107th CGA Match Play Championship at Bear Creek Golf Club. Brown, who was last year’s runner-up in this event, was able to finish on top this time to win his second individual CGA title (2005 CGA Public Links). This also marks the second consecutive year the title has been held by a member of the CSU golf team, as Brown’s teammate Aaron Weston held it in 2006. Brown’s name will become the 107th to be engraved on the coveted Richard C. Campbell trophy, joining the likes of Babe Lind, Steve Jones, Brandt Jobe and Hale Irwin.
Brown took control of the match early, and never looked back. He won five of the first six holes which featured three birdies, and he was able to pour in two more birdies on holes #8 and #9 to take a 6 up lead. Brown extended his lead to 8 up after the first 18 holes of play, having made eight birdies against only one bogey. To begin the second round, Brown rattled off eight consecutive pars to increase his lead to 9 up through 26 holes. On the par-5 #9, the 27th hole of the match, Brown earned his ninth birdie of the day to win the match 10 and 9. This was the largest known margin of victory in this event since 1985 when current PGA Tour player Brandt Jobe won 12 and 11.
For Glissmeyer, a current member of the University of Southern California Men’s Golf Team, this was his first appearance in the Match Play finals. He is a two-time CGA Junior Match Play champion with one of those victories coming at Bear Creek, and recently regained national attention with his round of 16 finish at the 2007 British Amateur. Glissmeyer was awarded the CGA silver medal as CGA Match Play finalist.
