David Delich of the Broadmoor GC made an unlikely par on the first playoff hole to defeat fellow Broadmoor member John Olive in the final match of the CGA Senior Match Play at Red Rocks Country Club. On the par-four first hole, Olive’s drive was safely in the first cut of rough but Delich’s drive had found the thick foot-tall native rough. When Delich chose to take an unplayable and a one-stroke penalty, It seemed that Olive would win his fifth title. Delich put his approach shot on the green 20 feet from the hole and Olive missed the green left. Olive chipped up to four feet, then watched Delich sink his long putt for par. Olive’s par putt slid past the hole, making Delich the champion. This was Delich’s first CGA event as a senior having recently turned 50, and it was his second CGA individual title as he had won the CGA Mid-Amateur in 1997. For the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame inductee Olive, this was his sixth finals appearance in the event and only his second loss.
The final match was incredible with numerous lead changes and clutch shots. On the back nine, only the 12th hole was halved ““ Delich had the lead three times only to have Olive win the next hole. Delich made birdie on 13 to go 1up, then Olive squared the match on 14 with a solid par. Olive took a 1 up lead with a birdie on 15, but made bogies on both 16 and 17 and lost both holes. With Delich leading 1up, both players were on the green in regulation on 18 and Olive faced a tricky 25-foot putt for birdie. He proceeded make the putt forcing Delich to make birdie from 18-feet to win. Delich missed the putt forcing the match into extra holes and setting the stage for his dramatic victory in 19 holes.
Delich had defeated Bill Boyd of Highland Hills GC 1 up in the morning’s semifinal match to advance to the finals. Olive had defeated Chuck Fisher of Riverdale GC 4 and 3 to make the finals.
In the Super Senior Division, David Farabaugh of The Ranch CC defeated Bob Sims of Black Bear GC 3 and 2 in the final m,atch to win his first CGA title.
