Chris Carlson of Lone Tree Golf Club shot 71 in the final round for a total of 218 to win the CGA Mid-Amateur Championship at the challenging Vista Ridge Golf Club. Carlson overcame a double bogey on the par-5 15th, and sealed the victory with a 12-foot birdie putt on the final hole. His 71 was one of only two sub-par rounds on the final day, and his three-day total of 218 (two over par) earned him a four-stroke victory. “I can’t compete with the college kids anymore,” said the 37 year old Carlson, “So the Mid-Amateur Championship is one I’ve secretly wanted to win for a long time.” The win is Carlson’s first CGA state amateur victory.
Seven-time champion Rick DeWitt of West Woods Golf Club fired a final round 73 to move into second place at 222. Defending champion and current CGA Match Play champion Steve Irwin of Lakewood Country Club carded a final round 76 to finish in a third place tied at 223 with Matt Strong of Wellshire Golf Course, who finished with a 74. Pat Diaz of Heritage of Westmoor shot 76 to finish in fifth place at 224.
